Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: What Really Sets Them Apart?

A factual overview of formation, identification and certification of natural diamonds compared to lab-grown diamonds.

Not every diamond is the same. Alongside stones that formed over billions of years within the Earth's mantle, lab-grown diamonds are now widely available. Both consist chemically of carbon and share the same crystal structure. The difference lies in their origin – and this has consequences for rarity, evaluation and trade.

How Natural Diamonds Form

Natural diamonds form under extreme pressure and high temperatures roughly 150 to 200 kilometers below the Earth's surface. Volcanic activity transports them upward through so-called kimberlite pipes. This process typically takes more than a billion years. Every natural diamond is therefore a geological one-of-a-kind.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made

Lab-grown diamonds are produced using two established methods: HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature), which technically replicates natural formation conditions, or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition), where carbon atoms are deposited layer by layer onto a diamond seed. The process takes weeks rather than billions of years.

How Are the Two Types Distinguished?

Visually and chemically, natural and lab-grown diamonds are indistinguishable to the naked eye. They can only be told apart using specialized testing equipment, such as spectroscopy, which reveals minute differences in inclusions, growth patterns or trace elements. This is precisely why independent verification by recognized laboratories such as GIA is essential.

Why Certification Is Crucial

A GIA certificate clearly states the origin of a diamond – natural or lab-grown – along with its 4 Cs. Without this documentation, reliable differentiation is practically impossible for buyers. Transparency about origin is therefore a core element of serious diamond trading.

STIG GROUP: A Focus on Certified Natural Diamonds

STIG INTERNATIONAL trades exclusively in GIA-certified natural diamonds, with origin and characteristics fully documented. Within STIG ROCK, this certification forms the basis for structured diamond ownership – traceable, transparent and independently verified.
