The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was introduced in 2003 to stop the trade of so-called "blood diamonds" — diamonds whose sale funds armed conflict. Today more than 80 countries participate in the agreement.
How does certification work?
Every shipment of rough diamonds crossing an international border must carry a tamper-resistant Kimberley certificate, confirming the diamonds originate from conflict-free sources.
